Where ayam gepuk could open next

Every KFC, McDonald’s and Marrybrown site with no ayam gepuk outlet within 3 km is proven food-and-beverage ground that ayam gepuk has not reached. We ranked 384 of them by how closely their 2 km catchment resembles an existing outlet’s.

This ranks resemblance, not sales: the example uses no chain’s own figures. With a client’s outlet sales, the same method ranks sites by what the best outlets have in common.

Figure 1. Candidate sites (red squares) and the 265 existing ayam gepuk outlets (lime). Pick a site on the map or in the table to open its dossier. Grid references follow the street-directory grid of the site study.

The 20 closest matches

Each candidate is matched to the existing outlet whose catchment it most resembles, weighing the factors that set ayam gepuk sites apart from fast food: young voters most, then fast-food density, residents, students and Malay share. Lookalike is how close that match is, against how closely existing outlets resemble each other: 80 means a closer match than 80% of outlets have with their nearest peer. Fit is the same site’s place on the site study’s model, as a percentile among existing outlets in states with at least 10 of them.

  • Rent, frontage and parking: this data holds no property or premises records.
  • Daytime and evening traffic: residents are counted where they sleep; no phone-movement data is used.
  • Drive time: the catchment is a 2 km circle, not the roads people actually use.
  • Independent ayam gepuk stalls OpenStreetMap does not know about.

How far to trust the scores

  • Scores measure resemblance to where outlets already are, not whether those outlets make money.
  • Voter data is the 2022 roll: registered voters at their registered address, not today’s residents.
  • Lookalikes are drawn only from the 205 outlets with an exact location and voter data.
  • Candidates are OpenStreetMap fast-food sites; OSM misses some in smaller towns.

Method

  • Candidates: benchmark fast-food sites from the site study with no ayam gepuk outlet within 3 km, thinned to one per 1 km cluster (the site with most fast food nearby is kept).
  • Catchment factors: voters aged 18–29 and Malay voters (PRU15 polling districts), fast-food outlets and residents within 2 km (WorldPop 2020), students enrolled within 2 km (MOHE 2025, log-scaled). Each is standardised, then weighted by its log-odds per SD in a logistic model of ayam gepuk against fast-food sites with state fixed effects: .
  • Lookalike: weighted distance to the nearest of the 205 outlets with an exact location and voter data, expressed as the share of those outlets whose own nearest peer is further away.
  • Fit: the model’s predicted odds for the site, as a percentile of existing outlets’ predicted odds; shown only for states with 10 or more outlets.
  • Ranking: by lookalike distance; fit breaks ties only, so a state without enough outlets is neither helped nor hurt.
